Treatment of Gum Diseases

Gum problems are caused by the accumulation of bacteria in the teeth and surrounding tissues. These deposits lead to redness, swelling, and even bleeding of the gums. They also cause gum recession and create pockets between the teeth and gums. Bacteria enter these pockets and erode the bone around the teeth, leading to advanced gum diseases.

Dental calculus, or tartar, forms when minerals in saliva deposit onto the plaque on the teeth. It is crucial to have regular dental cleanings and check-ups every 6 months to prevent gum diseases. Contrary to popular belief, getting dental cleanings is not harmful but rather beneficial for the teeth and surrounding tissues. Accumulation of dental calculus often results in gum recession, tooth and bone loss, and tooth mobility, which are common problems.

In some cases, dental calculus can progress towards the tooth root. In such situations, a procedure called “subgingival curettage” or “surgical removal of dental calculus” is necessary. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and requires expertise. At Dent Akgül Dental Clinic, this procedure is carried out by Periodontology Specialist Dr. Semih Akgül. It involves numbing the affected area and cleaning the inflamed areas around the tooth root.

If advanced bone erosion is present around the tooth, a treatment option called “guided tissue regeneration” is available. This treatment involves placing special materials such as bone powder and membranes in the affected area to promote the regeneration of new bone. The gum tissue covering the area with bone loss is lifted, and after the treatment is completed, the wound is sutured and left to heal. Post-operative follow-up appointments every 3-6 months are necessary. The goal of this treatment is to ensure the longevity of the patient’s teeth in the mouth for many years.

Gum overgrowth can have various causes. If there is an abnormal type of gum growth, it indicates a gum problem that requires immediate treatment. In such cases, treatment methods such as “gingivectomy and gingivoplasty” are applied. In some patients, the teeth may appear shorter due to excessive gum growth. Periodontology Specialist Dr. Semih Akgül will examine you in these cases and provide detailed information about the treatment options.

Another treatment method we offer is called “depigmentation,” which aims to eliminate gum discoloration and restore a pink appearance. In some patients, the gum color can be dark brown, purple, or black due to the accumulation of melanocyte cells in the upper tissue layer called the gum epithelium. In such cases, reshaping the gum tissue and achieving an aesthetic appearance for pigmented gums is necessary. This allows for a coral pink and natural gum appearance. This procedure requires expertise and is performed by Periodontology Specialist Dr. Semih Akgül at Dent Akgül Dental Clinic.

Diode lasers, also known as gum lasers, are frequently preferred in gum operations due to their ability to minimize bleeding and pain. Laser gum treatment is a specialized procedure performed by our Periodontology Specialist. Diode lasers, which were the subject of our specialist’s thesis, provide patients with a comfortable and reliable treatment option.

Sinus lift surgery

Sinus lift surgery, also known as sinus augmentation, is a procedure performed in the upper jaw to increase the bone volume in the area of the maxillary sinuses, which are hollow spaces located above the premolar and molar teeth. These sinuses help reduce the weight of the skull and assist in the production of certain sounds when speaking.

After a tooth extraction, the height of the bone gradually decreases, and the sinus cavities may descend downwards. In cases where implant placement becomes impossible due to significant bone loss after long periods of tooth loss, a procedure called “Sinus Lifting” is performed. This procedure aims to increase the bone volume. Through a specialized surgical technique, the lowered sinus cavities are filled with bone graft material, pushing them upward. This creates sufficient space for implant placement in the edentulous areas. The goal of the procedure is to create enough bone volume to accommodate the length and width of the implant.

Sinus lift surgery is performed by Periodontology Specialist Dr. Semih Akgül at Dent Akgül Dental Clinic. During the procedure, the bone can be obtained from the patient’s own body or inorganic bone graft materials can be used.

The surgery can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. It is expected that healthy bone tissue will form within approximately 6 months after the procedure. After the healing period, dental implants can be placed. However, for implant placement to be performed in the same session as the sinus lift, there needs to be a minimum of 4 mm of bone in the area.
